Osteoporosis drug 'doubles cancer risk'

A drug taken by more than a million people with osteoporosis could double
their risk of developing cancer of the oesophagus, according to a study
published today.


Those who have taken oral bisphosphonates for five years or more are twice as
likely to develop the cancer than those who have not, the analysis of
medical records found.



Every year almost 8,000 people in Britain are diagnosed with cancer of the
oesophagus, or gullet cancer, and about 7,500 people die from it.
