End of 'summer' near, more odd weather expected

The whole summer has been unusually cool over California, mixed with occasional heat waves - "like a roller coaster," said meteorologist Mike Pechner. Except for a hot spell in late August and another just this week, much of the state has had the coolest summer weather in years.

Labor Day is the unofficial end of summer by the bay, but it looks as if the odd weather patterns that have marked the past three months will stay around for a while.

The holiday weekend will be both chilly and warm, with fog expected along the coast today and Sunday, and a warm and pleasant Labor Day. Then the National Weather Service expects fog Tuesday with below-normal temperatures for the rest of the week.

"We might even see some snow in the Sierra later in the week," said National Weather Service forecaster Duane Dykstra.

Snow occasionally falls in the Sierra in September - usually toward the end of the month - but an early snow fits right in with this summer's quirky weather pattern.
